PLANTS ADAPTATION
Blue Eyed Grass
Blue eyed grass, is a perennial blue eyed wild flower, it is known to be part of the Iris family. It is a native plant of North America, forming clumps of long foliage, which thrive in the spring time, with small flowers rising. These plants will thrive, in a variety of different types of soil, and will attract lots of bees throughout the year. The stems grow up to 60 centimeters. This plants species, prefers moisture and good drainage, however, will also tolerate summer dryness. Having thick roots, under ground. It can be propagated by seed, and self sows. It is known for being moderately hardy and will survive temperatures down to -7 degrees celsius. Therefore, will survive all year long, which is why it is a perennial.

Sunflowers
Sunflowers are also one of the type of flowers that, can be found in temperate grasslands. This plant, is claimed to being native to North America. However, historians believe that this plant originated from places in Asia, and was carried by the Native Americans back to their homeland. Sunflowers, are sun trackers and require a good amount of sunlight in order to thrive. Sunflowers in general do not tolerate the cold, and when the season changes to fall, they generally die out. There are varieties that tolerate the cold much better, such as the perennial kinds. However, they are able to grow the following season, due to their seeds, which fall from the flower bud, into the ground.

Cotton Wood Tree
Cottonwood tree, is a similar type of tree like the oak. They are native to North America. These trees tolerate a variety of different soil types, as well. They are able to to survive the extreme forest fires of the temperate grasslands by growing on the edges of rivers and streams. In which they develop a very thick, and corky bark. The cottonwood is described as having leaves, that are 3-5 inches long, triangular shaped. The cottonwood tree thrives in environments where soil is moist, and well-drained. As the season slowly changes from summer to fall, the leaves of the cottonwood turn a bright yellow, much like the oak tree. In the winter all of the leaves fall, and the plant enters hibernation, until the spring season.

Catail plants
Cattail plants are described as being wetland plants, with a unique flower on top, resembling a spike, with leaves that reach heights up to 10 feet. The pollinated flowers on the top of the plant, develops into fluffy seed heads, blowing across the water in fall seasons. Just like many other plant species found in the grassland biome, cattails spread through their root system. Their thick root system grow underground near the edge of ponds, which is where they get most of their nutrients. Due to their immense root system, cattails adapt very well to the climate. They survive the summer heat, as they are always near water, and they also survive the cold breeze of autumn. They only dry out in extreme winters, however they grow back again, due to their deep roots.

Oak Trees
Although rare in a temperate grassland, oak trees can still be found occasionally. Oak trees are usually large in size, and can reach 70 feet in height. Oaks also produce fruits, known as acorn. Oak trees in general are adaptable to a variety of different environments. With good drainage oak trees can survive extreme heat of the temperate grasslands, where temperatures may reach above 40 degrees celsius. This is again due to their complex root system, where they can search for water very deep in the ground. In the autumn season, the leaves turn yellow and begin to drop. By the time winter has arrived, they will have shed all of their leaves. They go into a hibernation, through the whole winter, and then grow new leaves in the spring.
